The second section of the history of Kappa describes a series of firsts for the fraternity which took place in the 1880s. The 1881 Convention saw the change from a Grand Chapter system of government to a Grand Council system, with the first Grand President Tate Hartsuff. Chapters were divided into four provinces, three types of membership were established, and a fraternity publication, the Golden Key, was established. The 1884 Convention saw the creation of the first songbook. The first sub-conventions were held in 1885, Phi Chapter took ownership of the Key in 1886, and in 1890 the Kappa began the panhellenic movement by passing a resolution which invited the different women's fraternities to a Panhellenic Convention in Boston.
